The Position & Location

 Position

Are you the World Sugar Research Organisation’s and the US Sugar Association’s next talented Nutrition Scientist Intern? We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Graduate (MSc or BSc) to join and work across our professional teams. Using an evidence-based approach, you will be working towards our shared mission to bust the myths on sugars and health worldwide.

You will assist WSRO and the Sugar Association’s Science Teams in building knowledge of the global scientific and policy landscape on sugars and health, answering questions such as:

  • Does eating too much sugars cause diabetes?
  • How do dietary intakes of sugars around the world compare?

Over this twelve-month placement, you’ll gain insight into the different sectors that nutrition science spans (including the Sugar Industry, the wider food industry, academia and public health). You’ll gain first-hand experience of how these are brought together to bridge the gap between research and communications. You’ll be inspired to develop the knowledge and skills needed to build a great career, enhancing consumer understanding and confidence in the role that sugar plays in the diet.

Duration and Location

This is a 12-month placement. Over the course of the year, you will spend around 6 months working with the WSRO Science Team and around 6 months seconded to the US Sugar Association. You will be employed in the UK by WSRO (under UK employment law) for the 12 month period and paid in GBP(£) by WSRO.

The structure of the placement will be built around the needs of WSRO and the Sugar Association, and around your desire to spend time on placement in the US.

For example, you might work 2.5 days a week for each organisation, “virtually” from the UK. Or you might work for 6 months with WSRO, followed by 6 months working virtually with the Sugar Association, from the UK.

Over the year, there will be the opportunity (Covid-permitting) to spend a period (2 months) at the Sugar Association’s offices in Washington DC, USA. Your return flights & expenses such as your ESTA and travel insurance will be paid for, but you will be responsible for your own accommodation and living costs whilst on placement in the US.

Your time with WSRO

During your time with WSRO, you will work from your UK home, interacting daily with WSRO’s remote team of nutrition scientists. We will give you our full support and you’ll have great mentoring from us. Our ideal candidate will be able to attend monthly team days around South-East England/London, and meet for regular co-working days in London (around Waterloo/London Bridge).

You’ll support the communication of scientific knowledge on sugars and health to WSRO’s members across the globe in easy-to-understand formats, contributing to creative and visual outputs (e.g., infographics, videos and animations). We also have an exciting website and rebranding project underway which you can be involved with!

You’ll gain experience in peer-reviewing scientific literature on sugars and health, assisting the Science Team with global horizon scanning of the scientific and policy landscape relating to sugars. Part of your role will also involve data management, keeping up to date on newly published sugars intake data across the globe, and supporting the development of a new interactive global sugars intake dashboard.

Your time with the Sugar Association

You’ll have a fantastic opportunity to broaden your global knowledge in nutrition, and begin to expand your network around the world, by working with one of our existing members, The Sugar Association (USA). Your time at The Sugar Association will involve assisting their friendly team on key tasks and projects, including, translating science into consumer, health professional and educator audiences such as website, social media, educational materials and presentations.

During your time with the Sugar Association, you will work both remotely from your home in the UK and then spend time on placement with us in our offices in Washington DC (see above). Via the US ESTA visa waiver programme, you may make trips of up to 90 days at a time to the US for business/research purposes. During any placement time spent with us in the US, you will remain an employee of WSRO (i.e., employed, paid and insured under UK employment law).

Other potential travelling opportunities

Travelling opportunities may also arise during the planning and delivery of WSRO’s 2023 Annual Meeting (June 2023 – location TBC) and WSRO’s Interim Members Meeting (November 2022, London). These meetings showcase the latest science in nutrition and health with talks from leading academic scientists. You’ll have the opportunity to network with Sugar Industry stakeholders and research scientists from across the globe.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum BSc or MSc degree in Nutrition, health-related or life-science subject.
  • A passion for translating complex scientific information into communications for non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong written communication skills. You will be creative, with the ability to make science visual and deliver key messages to target audiences.

  • Experience using reference managing software, e.g., Zotero.
  • An interest in key issues and global discussions around sugars and health policy.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Personal Attributes

  • You will be self-disciplined with a strong ethos for independent home-based working. You will work alongside, and be supported by, the rest of the team with regular virtual meetings. Opportunities for regular in-person meetings, location permitting, will be arranged.
  • Confident in assisting with communicating to global audiences, with the ability to flex your communication style to a wide variety of audiences.

  • Development, training and mentoring
  • 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays according to UK/US location)

Organisations Background

 World Sugar Research Organisation

The World Sugar Research Organisation (WSRO) is an international not for profit organisation committed to improving the understanding of the role that sugars plays in human nutrition and health. It provides relevant, evidence based scientific information and analysis of sugars’ role in health and nutrition, to its members and other stakeholders. Members of WSRO are worldwide sugars producers, as well as associations representing them.

The WSRO provides a credible evidence-based knowledge hub for the science on sugars in the context of health, as well as that relating to public health policies, by monitoring global scientific evidence and identifying where scientific consensus is, and where gaps in knowledge are. WSRO is committed to upholding the fundamental principles of science and relying solely on objective science in its communications. While WSRO may contribute to international, science-based consultations, WSRO does not advocate or lobby on scientific or policy issues and is non-commercial.

WSRO supports a small programme of peer-reviewed transparent research, funding systematic reviews and research studies aimed at improving the understanding of the role that sugars plays in human nutrition and health. These are undertaken by scientists in established academic institutions across the globe and, where possible, published as Open Access. It is a contractual requirement of WSRO research funding that any researchers receiving financial support from WSRO clearly declare this funding on their publications.
